Harpenden Colts U16 Eagles 2 v Finchley Revolution 2

We squeezed a 2-2 draw this morning against Finchley Revolution, who were much improved on the first time we played them. We were lucky to be only 1-0 down at half time after a lacklustre start and – an old story here - an absence of solid tackling. The second half was better and we pulled back to 1-1 with a goal from David. With about 20 minutes left to play, their main striker again showed his outstanding pace and broke free to chip Joe for a very good second goal. Both sides continued to make chances, with both goalkeepers making some outstanding saves. With 5 minutes to go we gambled by pushing Ben up as a 3rd striker and it paid off. Tom G cut the ball back to find space against his full back and crossed to David who scored from 3 metres.


The final minutes were fairly intense and we could have found a winner – but in the end a draw was a good result. In the table it keeps us 2 points ahead of Finchley, otherwise they would have pulled ahead of us.

Harpenden Colts U16 Eagles 4 v Edson Youth 3

We had a fantastic win yesterday 4-3 against the runaway leaders of our division - Edson Youth. It was a very exciting game, with the Eagles 2 up within 10 minutes. We caught Edson mentally unprepared - I think they were expecting an easy game. The first goal was scored by Alex from a cross from the left by Tom Cooke. David, on his return from injury, scored the second. Edson got one back, but shortly before half time Declan scored with an outrageous shot/cross from wide on the right.

In the second half Edson piled on the pressure with Joe Graham - back in goal - making a string of excellent saves. He couldn't stop them coming back to 3-3 however. Then David outpaced the Edson defence onto a free kick and scored our fourth. The last few minutes were very tense, with Edson clearing off the line from a shot by Will and then Edson hitting the cross bar and the ball bouncing down onto the goal line, but we held on for a fantastic victory.

The result lifts us off the bottom to 4th place (see www.football.mitoo.co.uk/LeagueTab.cfm?TblName=Matches&DivisionID=3646&LeagueCode=WFL2008) and with our squad now getting back into shape after the early-season injuries, let's hope that we can keep up the momentum.
